It ensures that every fibre drum—regardless of manufacturer—meets minimum safety, strength, and durability requirements suitable for transporting a wide range of products.
Scope and Application
The standard applies to cylindrical fibre drums made primarily from multi-ply kraft paperboard or similar materials. These drums are commonly used in sectors such as:
- Pharmaceuticals and bulk chemicals
- Food and flavoring industries
- Agrochemicals and pigments
- Engineering powders and resins
IS 7601 defines the requirements for drums with or without metal ends, liners, or locking rings, ensuring performance consistency across product types.
Construction and Material Requirements
Under IS 7601, fibre drums must be built from multiple plies of kraft paper or fibreboard, laminated and wound to form a strong cylindrical shell.
Key structural features include:
- Body: Made from kraft paper or fibreboard, with sufficient wall thickness for load strength.
- Ends: May be fibre or metal or plastic, depending on product needs.
- Closure: Typically a metal or plastic clamp ring for a secure seal.
- Liners: Optional inner layers such as HDPE film, aluminium foil, or bitumen coating, for moisture or chemical resistance.

Testing Requirements Under IS 7601
To qualify as per IS 7601, fibre drums must undergo a series of performance tests to demonstrate structural reliability. Common tests include:
- Side Wall: The bursting strength of the side wall shall not be less than the value given in Table above.
- Ends: If the ends are of fibreboard the bursting strength of each end shall be not less than the relevant values. If the ends are not made of fibre board, then burst strength of the ends shall not be applicable.
- Stack Load Test: The drums shall show no signs of damage or rupture when tested under a load equivalent to three times the mass of the drums with its intended contents
- Drop Test: The drums when dropped from a height of 1.2 m according to the method given in Appendix A, shall not show any sign of damage. Three drums shall be tested for separate drops on top edge,bottom edge and side.
- Surface Water Resistance: The fibreboard outer surface of the drums and the ends if made of fibreboard shall be water resistant in such a manner that the average of three tests from side walls and average of two tests from each end shall not show increase in mass exceeding 155 g/m2
